Foxwoods Casino License In Limbo
By Tony Romeo
HARRISBURG, Pa (CBS) - The status of the Philadelphia casino license formerly held by Foxwoods is in limbo now that the Senate majority leader is signaling that the legislature will not decide the future of the license anytime soon.
In early May, the state House passed a bill that would eliminate the requirement that the Foxwoods license remain in Philadelphia, and open the license up to statewide competition. But now, Chester Republican Dominic Pileggi, the Senate majority leader, says there will be no action on the House bill before summer recess.
"We have the bill from the House. There's a variety of opinions on the House bill in the Senate. I do not expect any action on that issue before the budget is done."
As to how the gaming board should proceed, Pileggi simply points to existing law that designates the license for Philadelphia. But the board had up till now indicated it would wait for legislative action before going ahead.
As to whether it will continue to wait, a spokesman for the board says it's too soon to comment but says members will likely discuss it when they meet in the near future.
