Four-Year NJ Turnpike Widening Project To Be Completed Before Yearend

TRENTON, N.J. (CBS) -- There's good news for drivers on the New Jersey Turnpike who have been dealing with lane expansion work between Exit 6 in Burlington County, north to Exit 9, for more than four years: the work is almost finished.
With little fanfare, turnpike officials have moved traffic onto three newly minted lanes in each direction, so far up to Exit 8A in Cranbury, NJ.
An extra outside lane has been added to the two already there, up to Exit 9 in New Brunswick.
Turnpike spokesman Tom Feeney says the three previous lanes, north and south, are now shut down.
"They're going to be resurfaced and have significant repairs made to them between now and November," he explained.
He said that turnpike officials plan to have the $2.3-billion project complete in time for the Thanksgiving travel crush, with six lanes northbound and six southbound along that 32-mile stretch through the central part of the state.
