Four Phila. Schools Will Get Academic Revamp Based on Advocates' Plans

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The School District of Philadelphia today announced the first round of schools to be overhauled academically based on proposals by teachers and community organizations.
Four schools are the first to be revamped under the district's "School Redesign Initiative," which gives teachers, principals, and community groups the opportunity to suggest academic overhauls for schools.
The four schools chosen for redesign are:
- Chester Arthur Elementary, which will use an inquiry-based approach;
- Carnell Elementary, which will have project-based learning;
- John Jenks Academy for the Arts and Sciences, using teacher collaboration; and
- Tilden Middle School, which will combine classroom and online instruction.
The schools will remain district-managed.
Final district approval is expected in March, with the changes taking effect in September 2015.
