Four Nabbed In Alleged Date-And-Rob Scam In Bucks County
BENSALEM, Pa. (CBS) - Bensalem police say four people from Philadelphia are behind bars in Bucks County on robbery and related charges in connection with a dating scam they were allegedly running from a motel.
Police say that earlier this month, there were at least four armed robberies committed in less than a week.
According to investigators, the male victims would connect with a woman named "Lisa" on a phone dating service called "Lavalife." They would go out to dinner in Philadelphia, and then she would invite him back to a motel room in Bensalem.
When they got there, police sergeant William McVey says, she would send a text to her accomplices who would knock on the door. When the victim answered, he was robbed at gunpoint.
And McVey believes there could be other victims.
"Based on the embarrassment factor. Some of the victims may be married, so therefore they don't want to report it. They committed four in a four-day period, so our belief is that there may be a few that they did before that or in that same time frame," McVey told KYW Newsradio.
McVey says police got good information from the first victim, and Saturday night they interrupted a robbery in progress along the Route 1 corridor. The four suspects were arrested and a gun was recovered.
