Former White House Press Secretary: Republican Primary Could Damage Party Permanently
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Former White House Press Secretary and current cable news host Dana Perino predicted big changes to the Republican party following this year's presidential election.
Perino, in an interview with Rich Zeoli on Talk Radio 1210 WPHT, said this primary campaign is causing serious damage to the GOP.
"The party could be permanently damaged regardless. To me, I think the conservative principles that the Republicans have in common, those will never expire. Those are steadfast. But parties, they do come and go and they evolve. Or if they don't evolve, they die. I don't know what's going to happen but we could be looking at the destruction of the Republican party. Or a new resurgence and it might look a lot different than the Republican party of the past."
She intimated that not everyone involved with be disappointed if that happens.
"That might make some people very happy. It might make other people unhappy and decide to leave the party. It's certainly not settled at this point. This next several months is going to be very important."
Perino stated that on the Democratic side, the fight between Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton is just like what is happening to the Republicans, but on a smaller scale.
"The Democrats are going through a similar thing. It's not as pronounced as ours. They try to keep a lid on it. But, Hillary Clinton is getting a real run for her money from Bernie Sanders. It's amazing. He has said he's going to challenge her nomination on the floor.
