Former Sears Store In Camden, New Jersey Loses Its Sign As Demolition Nears

CAMDEN, N.J. (CBS) -- Part of a Camden, New Jersey landmark is gone from view, but it's being saved for a future memorial.
The concrete "Sears, Roebuck and Co. Retail Store" sign has been taken down from the entrance of the former Sears building on Admiral Wilson Boulevard.
Campbell Soup Co.spokesman Anthony Sanzio says Campbell's has put the Sears sign into storage.
"We removed part of the façade and the Sears and Roebuck sign so that we can use that to commemorate the building's role in Camden retailing," he tells KYW Newsradio.
After years of legal battles (see related story), Campbell's bought the vacant Sears building in June with plans to demolish it to make way for an office park (another related story).
Sanzio says the 1,000-pound Sears sign was removed a few weeks ago, and will be incorporated into a yet-to-be designed memorial to Camden's retailing past. Where?
"Not necessarily on that site. It potentially could be on that site. Those things have not been worked out yet. We're still working through that with the Camden County Historical Society."
Sanzio says a date has not been set yet for the start of the Sears building's demolition.
