Former Pa. Governor Rendell Calls New Hampshire Lawmaker A 'Dumbbell'
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Former Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell took to the airwaves in Philadelphia on Friday and called a lawmaker who opposed expanding gun control laws a "dumbbell."
Rendell, speaking with Dom Giordano on Talk Radio 1210 WPHT, called Republican New Hampshire Senator Kelly Ayotte the insult with regards to her stance on gun control issues.
"The bill says quite clearly that any attempt to use this information to build a federal registry is a felony punishable by 15 years in prison. So for someone like Kelly Ayotte, that dumbbell Senator from New Hampshire, to say she voted against it because she fears that it would create a registry, either she didn't read the bill or she's outright lying," Rendell said.
Ayotte voted against a bill brokered by Pennsylvania Republican Senator Pat Toomey and West Virginia Democratic Senator Joe Manchin.
The bill would have expanded the scope of background checks on gun purchases to include sales at gun shows and over the Internet. The bill eventually failed in the Senate.
The proposal would also have secured what Toomey labeled "Second Amendment rights for law-abiding citizens." Private gun sales would not have been subject to government scrutiny under the plan.
The Democratic Rendell is slated to speak at an anti-gun rally in Bucks County. At the same time, hundreds of gun owners are expected to hold their own rally for their second amendment rights. (See Related Story)
