Former Phila. Mayor Speaks On New Role On Federal Homeland Security Council

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Former Mayor of Philadelphia Michael Nutter is speaking out about his new appointment to the federal Homeland Security Council.

Former Mayor Michael Nutter was sworn in last week as one of 40 members of a council that will advise Secretary Jeh Johnson on public safety, counter terrorism, cyber security and other issues impacting homeland security.

"This is purely volunteer, I'm giving my time. I love to serve my country and this is one way to provide that service," said Nutter.

On Monday immigrant advocates raised concerns about Nutter's new role, citing his decision to roll back an executive order ending cooperation between police and ICE. Nutter says the change only allowed police to alert homeland security of the release of extremely dangerous people.

"A terrorist, a convicted murderer, a rapist, child abuser."

The order has since been rescinded by Mayor Jim Kenney. Nutter says his work in coordinating agencies for the World Meeting of Families and other events provided experience needed for the security council.
