'For Pete's Sake' Family Fun Walk Benefits Cancer Patients Across The Delaware Valley
NORTH WALES, Pa. (CBS) -- On Sunday, April 10, families and friends will take part in the new 'For Pete's Sake, Walk,' a two-mile fun walk at Citizens Bank Park benefiting cancer patients and their families.
The walk is hosted by For Pete's Sake Cancer Respite Foundation, which provides week-long getaways for cancer patients and their families living in the Delaware Valley.
"The new For Pete's Sake, Walk! at Citizens Bank Park is more than just a walk," said Marci Schankweiler, Founder, For Pete's Sake Cancer Respite Foundation. "It celebrates the strength and courage of the many individuals and families dealing with the trauma that accompanies a cancer diagnosis. Through this event, we hope to raise funds to give even more individuals the rare chance to take a break from cancer."
Eyewitness News caught up with Kathleen Kulp, a mother of two who was diagnosed with leukemia in February 2010. Her family traveled to Davenport, Florida and stayed at a house owned by For Pete's Sake Cancer Respite Foundation.
"What's really great about this walk is that it's a group of people who don't know one another, but you're all supporting the same thing," said Kulp. "It's about giving somebody like me and my family the opportunity to go away and think about nothing else but having fun for a week."
"These people have had a long hard battles with this disease and we just give them a little break, a little glimmer of hope and some joy they get to share with their loved ones," said Phyllis Tyrrell, Principal of St. Rose of Lima Grade School who will be sending a team of student walkers to Citizen's Bank Park on Sunday.
Teams from around the region will circle the ballpark for two miles before getting the chance to enter the stadium, walk around the bases and cross home plate with the Phanatic.
"Of course the kids will be thinking of the Phillies Phanatic, but I'll be walking around, looking at people next to me who have experienced the same thing I have, who have enjoyed a vacation courtesy of For Pete's Sake," said Kulp.
