Food Truck Review: No. 24
UNIQUE GREEK
Market Street, between 33rd and 34th
Given that I've already found there to be 951 operating food trucks within Philadelphia (that's a real number, not an exaggeration), I'm surprised there aren't more Greek-themed trucks. The food's good and relatively uncomplicated.
But I did find this one – the blue, yellow and purple Unique Greek truck -- among the throng of trucks operating on Market Street near the Penn and Drexel campuses. I don't know about the "unique" part, but it was certainly Greek.
We enjoyed a $7 gyro packed with that great seasoned meat – a mix of beef and lamb – along with lightly grilled purple onions, tomato and tzatziki sauce. Unlike many places, they don't overload the sandwich with sauce, that mostly ends up in the trash or on your short. You can also order a chicken gyro or burger (befteki) gyro, and all come with a side of fries.
And, hey, if you like hot sauce, Unique Greek features three separate varieties of sriracha. Have fun experimenting.
Finish is up with a sweet, flaky honey-dipped baklava. Or try a honey-cinnamon honey puffs called loukoumades, if you dare trying to pronounce it.
