Foles Looks To Correct Mistakes

By Ed Benkin

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --  If you listen to the critics, it would be hard to believe Nick Foles has led the Eagles to a 5-2 record.

Even though the Eagles have a better record than most teams in the NFC, Foles has made his share of mistakes this season.  The quarterback has thrown nine interceptions after throwing just two a year ago.  Some are now questioning if Foles is the long-term answer at quarterback, but the Eagles' signal caller isn't worried about any outside criticism.

"I'm going to keep working," said Foles.  "Just because you all asking me doesn't mean I'm done.  I'm going to keep working on fundamentals and study the film and study what's going on.  It's all correctable.  I just have to keep grinding through it."

Despite Foles' bad moments, the Eagles are still in control of their own destiny in the NFC East.  Teammates such as Riley Cooper believe expectations were sky high for Foles based on his performance last season and the expectations are part of the reason for the harsh critiques.

"We have the utmost confidence in Nick," Cooper said.  "I think he just gets held to such a high standard, which is good because that's the type of player he is.  Those are the standards he should have because he is that good."

Offensive Coordinator Pat Shurmur believes part of Foles' issues with interceptions stem from mechanics.  Shurmur feels Foles is as effective as any of the top NFL quarterbacks when his feet are in the right place when he passes the ball.

"We've got to correct the errors that we make in terms of turning the ball over," said Shurmur.  "What I'm finding with Nick is that when he sets his feet and steps into the throws, he's awesome.  What we're also finding is there are times when he gets flushed and he doesn't have his feet underneath him."

The Eagles remain confident Foles will improve in the second half of the season.  For now, Wide Receiver Jeremy Maclin says Foles' record speaks for itself.

"We're 5-2," Maclin said.  "We're a yard away from being 6-1 and we are two or three inches away from being 7-0.  He's leading us in the right direction."

Safety Nate Allen and Cornerback Brandon Boykin both missed practice on Tuesday.  Both are listed as day-to-day.
