Floods Force A Late Round Of Spraying For Mosquitoes In Bucks County
HARRISBURG, Pa. (CBS) - It's late in the season, but recent floods have prompted state environmental officials schedule another round of mosquito spraying in areas of Bucks County tonight and tomorrow night.
Due to recent floods, high populations of adult mosquitoes capable of transmitting the West Nile Virus have been detected in portions of Bristol and Bensalem Townships and that will prompt more spraying in those areas.
Lynda Rebarchak, spokeswoman for the state Department of Environmental Protection, says, "This far in the season we're usually starting to see a decline in the number of mosquitoes, which we had been seeing. But we didn't want to have areas be more of a breeding ground, with the flood waters, and the receding flood waters and any areas of ponding."
So, even though fall is nearly upon us, Rebarchak says it's a good idea to keep taking precautions against mosquitoes, such as making sure there's no stagnant water collecting in containers or discarded tires on your property, and using insect repellants and wearing long-sleeve shirts and pants.
