Firefighters Battle Large Forest Fire In Cumberland County
DOWNE TOWNSHIP, NJ (CBS) – The New Jersey Forest Fire Service continues to battle a large fire in Cumberland County.
The fire broke out around 3 p.m. on Wednesday at the Edward G. Bevan Fish and Wildlife Management Area just off Ackley Road in Downe Township.
The Department of Environmental Protection says 225 acres have burned so far.
The DEP has established a containment zone. Fourteen wildland engines, three tractor plows, an air tanker, a helicopter with water bucket, and an observation helicopter are working to contain the fire.
The DEP expects about 500 acres to have been destroyed by the time the blaze burns out, but that can change depending on conditions.
Ackley Road and Dividing Creek Road are closed at this time.
No homes are impacted.
A Red Flag Warning is in effect for the whole area.
