Fire Breaks Out Aboard Cape May-Lewes Ferry
CAPE MAY, N.J. (CBS/AP) — No one was injured in a fire aboard a Cape May-Lewes ferry Friday morning.
The fire broke out in the engine room of the Motor Vessel Delaware, which was docked at the pier in Cape May just before 3 a.m. Friday.
Coast Guard Lt. j.g. Jonas Miller says local fire departments responded and the fire was contained before 3:30 a.m.
A preliminary investigation indicates the fire is believed to have been started by an ember in the exhaust stack of the port engine.
Two crew members were aboard at the time and they were not injured.
The ferry shuttles passengers and vehicles between Cape May and Lewes, Delaware.
The following departures have been canceled due to the fire: 8:30 a.m. and noon departures from New Jersey and 10:15 a.m. and 1:45 p.m. departures from Delaware. Passengers with questions and concerns about departures are asked to visit www.cmlf.com or call 800-64 FERRY.
The Delaware River and Bay Authority says the vessel was in first the ferry fleet to undergo major renovations in 1996.
