Final 'Fugitive Safe Surrender' Program In NJ Starts Saturday

By David Madden

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ (CBS) -- Saturday marks the start of New Jersey's final "Fugitive Safe Surrender" program. Those wishing to take part need to get to an Atlantic City church over the next few days.

Any day except Sunday between now and Wednesday, you can show up at the Grace Assembly of God Church on Atlantic Avenue. And if you have an outstanding warrant in New Jersey, you can make use of the program regardless of where you live, according to Attorney General Jeffrey Chisea.

"It's the last chance for a second chance for people with non-violent offenses and disorderly persons offenses to come down and take care of them in a very easy way," Chisea explains.

How easy? The vast majority who show up get to go home the same day. Three previous surrender programs have resulted in thousands of people settling their scores with the law. That makes it safer for cops on the street, and easier on offenders who can stop looking over their shoulder.
