Final Car Removed After Train Derailment In Paulsboro
PAULSBORO, N.J. (CBS) – Officials announced Sunday that the final car containing vinyl chloride has been successfully removed from scene of a train derailment in Paulsboro, New Jersey.
The crash occurred around 7 a.m. Friday, November 30th when a Conrail freight train derailed while traveling over Mantua Creek in Paulsboro. (see related story)
Officials say the Jefferson Street bridge has been repaired and is ready to carry freight. Several test trains passed over the bridge before officials gave the all clear to resume rail operations.
"We've had over 250 professionals that have been working in shifts around the clock to help ensure the safety of all the residents," says U.S. Coast Guard captain Todd Wiemers.
Wiemers says the first priority was public safety, but getting the transit lines back up and running was also high on the list.
"There's a lot of product that moves to facilities in this area," he says, "and without the product these facilities can't operate."
Captain Wiemers says railroad officials will continue to monitor the bridge to ensure everything is functioning properly.
