Fiery Crash Snarls Traffic On I-95 In South Philadelphia
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – All lanes of Interstate 95 near Broad Street are open after a tractor-trailer caught fire, halting traffic along the highway Sunday morning.
The incident occurred just before 6 a.m. in the northbound lanes of I-95 near exit 19 in South Philadelphia.
Officials say the tractor-trailer caught fire after it made contact with another vehicle and then struck the concrete median. The accident caused both directions of I-95 to be shut down between the Walt Whitman Bridge and Broad Street for nearly two hours.
Traffic was backed up all the way to the Philadelphia International Airport as a result.
The southbound lanes began reopening just before 8 a.m., but it wasn't until around 1 p.m. that all lanes finally reopened.
Fire officials confirm the blaze was placed under control at 6:38 a.m.
The driver of the truck was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in stable condition.
