FEMA, NJ Officials To Assess Storm Damage
TRENTON, N.J. (CBS) - FEMA crews will be in South Jersey today to help assess the damage in several communities from last weekend's storms.
They'll start in the hardest hit areas of Cumberland and Salem Counties, where several roads remain closed. In government-speak, it's a "joint preliminary damage assessment" that will also include other South Jersey areas affected by Sunday's flooding rains.
Mary Goepfert, spokeswoman for the state Office of Emergency Management, says they hope to get an idea of how much repairs will cost.
"We are going to dig deep into those areas and look significantly at what type of dollar amounts are involved with the damages, but also what is possibly covered by insurance and then we'll see what is to be determined that's possibly eligible for public assistance."
After the assessment, the state will likely file a formal application for aid. Damage to homes will also be factored into the equation, but any decision on federal aid is probably weeks away.
