Federal IRS Workers Receive Identity Theft Protection Training
By David Madden
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - This time of year, you usually hear about the IRS offering help for people in getting their taxes done. But this year, a pilot project in several states actually has the IRS getting help from several states in tracking down those engaged in ripping off your identity.
Nine states, including Pennsylvania and New Jersey, are taking part in the plan that will make it easier for those who think their identities have been pilfered to file reports with the feds, says Gloucester County, New Jersey Prosecutor Sean Dalton.
"We talk to many different groups about identity theft and fraud. So we have a lot of local contacts out there in the community."
And it's not as hard as you might think for thieves to get information from your tax return or refund check. This pilot program, at least in New Jersey, will allow people to file those federal complaints through any county prosecutor. If it works, hopes are to take the idea cross country.
