FDA: Don't Turn To Online Marketplaces To Treat Concussions
By Lynne Adkins
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --- Now that fall sports are underway, treating concussions will become an issue.
The FDA is warning people not to turn to the internet to buy supplements to prevent or cure concussions or other traumatic brain injuries.
Gary Coody, the FDA's National Health Fraud Coordinator says there is nothing approved to help.
"There is a large problem with all sorts of products with unproven claims on the internet, and also the internet is an international marketplace, so right from your living room you can access products from countries where there may not be a regulatory structure to make sure they are safe and effective," he warned.
"We realize that parents might be thinking about the potential for their kids to be injured by jarring or shocks while playing sports, and some companies are exploiting the public's concern about concussions and promoting untested and unproven products."
Coody stresses that concussions require rest and a doctor's attention.
