Father of Starved Girl, 2 Others Sentenced In 2006 Case
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The father of Danieal Kelly has been sentenced to prison along with two social workers for their roles in the starvation death of the disabled Philadelphia teen in 2006.
Today, Daniel Kelly (Danieal's father), Dana Poindexter, and Mikal Kamuvaka were each sentenced to 2½ to five years behind bars.
Each was convicted in July of endangering the welfare of a child and other charges in the death of 14-year-old Danieal Kelly, who weighed just 42 pounds when she died (see related story).
Prosecutors say Daniel Kelly was guilty for abandoning his daughter to her mother, whom he knew was unfit. Poindexter and Kamuvaka, both Philadelphia Department of Human Services employees, displayed what assistant district attorney Ed McCann called "prolonged, callous, brutal indifference."
"It's one thing that if a child dies and it's some kind of thing that happens on a given day and somebody was supposed to be looking out. It's another thing when somebody's supposed to be paying attention to a family and the child declines over a prolonged period of time," McCann said today.
Danieal's mother, Andrea Kelly, was previously sentenced to 20-40 years in prison for third-degree murder. More than twelve people have been convicted in this horrific case that dates back to August 2006.
