Fatal House Fire In Delaware County
By Dan Wing
SPRINGFIELD, Pa. (CBS) --- A fire in a Delaware County home turned fatal Saturday night, as responding crews were unable to reach an elderly woman trapped inside. The woman's name has not been released.
Flames gutted the two-story home on E. Leamy Avenue in Springfield. The fire broke out just before 8pm, and it moved fast before firefighters were able to knock down the blaze.
An eyewitness tried to get into the house to help the victim, and spoke to Eyewitness News.
"Me and the officer came up and tried to, you know, eventually I ended up kicking in the back window and then kicking in the back doors," the eyewitness said, shaken up after his experience. "The officer said, you know, I tried to say is anybody in there, but before I could the smoke was just so powerful. I mean, I couldn't even breathe. The officer said back up, and before I even knew it the fire wrapped around to the side of the house and we just stepped back."
There's no word on a possible cause.
