Farmers' Market in North Philly Promotes Healthy Eating
NORTH PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Pennsylvania state senator Shirley Kitchen presided over "Fresh Produce Day" on Thursday at the Cecil B. Moore farmers' market in North Philly to spread the message that healthy food is available and affordable.
Kitchen says there are just a few more weeks left to enjoy fresh, local produce at the market, which she says is a partnership between the community and the Food Trust:
"They've been very supportive of our effort."
Besides support, they're also offering more bang for the buck. Katy Wich, with the Food Trust, says her organization and the city health department have teamed up to offer Philly Food Bucks:
"When they purchase foods with their SNAP benefits at the farmers' market, they are actually going to get extra money to buy more fruits and vegetables. For every five dollars they spend, they get an additional $2 to spend on fruits and vegetables at the markets. It's an instant benefit."
