'Farm To Families' Provides Fresh Food For Those In Need
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A non-profit organization that works to support the health and well-being of children in North Philadelphia is providing fresh food boxes for families in those neighborhoods.
The Farm to Families program connects local farmers with North Philadelphia neighborhoods to provide fresh food boxes for five, 10 or 15 dollars every week at two locations.
At Girard College, families of students sign up and then pick up their food every other Friday.
Autumn Adkins Graves is President of Girard College:
"I saw this as an opportunity for our students to have something that they deserve that may not have been available to them. Also, it's nice because we're able to have this program as an option for our staff."
Jan Shaeffer, executive director of St. Christopher's Foundation for Children, says there's also nutrition information:
"Some families, they want different ideas or maybe they're unfamiliar with something. So, food identification like, 'I've never seen that broccoli before,' or, 'I've never seen, some families haven't.'"
Shelina James says it's perfect for her:
"Having it close by, it was here. Loving it, loving it."
