MENLO PARK, Calif. (CBS) -- Facebook, wanting to run your smartphone's desktop, today showed off its new software that it says puts people first instead of apps.
Rumors about a so-called "Facebook phone" have been circulating for years. But today, the world's largest social network finally unveiled a new way to integrate its network on Android phones.
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg made the announcement at a press event today at the company's headquarters. Facebook "Home" consists of a family of apps that become the home screen of your Android phone.
"With Home you see your world though people, not apps," Zuckerberg said. "One of the most important things that we do as people is stay connected with what's going on in the world around us."
With Home, the device's home screen transforms into "Cover Feed," a visually rich version of Facebook's News Feed for your phone.
Home also includes a more picture-oriented version of messaging, complete with a Facebook-invented feature called "Chat Heads."
HTC also unveiled a phone, dubbed the "First," with Facebook Home preloaded. It will be available April 12th for $100, exclusively through AT&T.
