Facebook To Feed Users Location-Specific Tips As They Visit Certain Spots

By social media editor Melony Roy

MENLO PARK, Calif. (CBS) -- Facebook, the social networking giant, has begun adding location-based tips to its users' news feeds.

The company says it is rolling out a new feature that uses your phone's location services to provide more information about the places you visit.

The feature is called "Place Tips," and it uses posts created from a place's page and from your friends. So now, when you visit a location your friends have been before, Facebook will bring up their related posts and photos.

Place Tips is optional, and will only appear if you've given Facebook permission to access your location.  The network says it won't share your location publicly.

The feature is rolling out slowly, beginning with specifc areas of high activity, such as Central Park and Times Square in New York City.
