Facebook Rolls Out Another New Feature
By Jenn Bernstein
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Facebook is once again revolutionizing the way we communicate with social media. It's unveiled a new feature that will let you send real, tangible gifts to your friends.
First, a "gift" option will show up on either your friend's birthday reminder or their timeline. You can then select items from hundreds of options, like a Starbucks gift card, cupcakes, or a teddy bear.
Your friend will then be able to preview the gift, accept it if it's up their alley, or exchange it. They give Facebook an address, and within days, the gift is at their door.
"I feel like I would use it just because it's convenient, and you're always on Facebook, so it's just a convenient click as opposed to going to a separate website," said Facebook user Priyanka Sharma.
Facebook says it's adding more options daily as companies try to tap into one of the largest customer bases in the world. But certain folks remain cautious.
"I'd really have to explore the app right now," said Facebook user Anmol Jaiswan.
"I don't use any credit card online; I'm totally against it," said Facebook user Sylvie Galiazzi.
Experts are reminding users to be wary of putting even more personal information on Facebook, like your address or credit card information.
"My feeling is if you can hack the State Department website in this country, you can certainly hack Facebook. I would worry about giving up things you wouldn't want to give up," said Temple University Professor Frank Farley.
Facebook says it is gradually rolling out this feature. Right now, a small percentage of people have early access to it. The company says it will continue to roll out gifts to more users in the coming months.
