Facebook Planning Rollout of Approved-For-Workplace Version of Social Network

By social media Melony Roy

MENLO PARK, Calif. (CBS) -- It was once considered taboo by many to open your Facebook page at work, but the social networking giant is preparing to launch a new product to overcome that notion.

Facebook has launched a pilot of its long-rumored "Facebook at Work" product, which operates a lot like "regular" Facebook — there's a news feed, messaging, and groups —- but is limited to your colleagues instead of your friends and family.

It will have its own, separate Apple and Android app, which Facebook put in the App Store today.  However, most people won't yet be able to download it, since Facebook has limited its initial trial run to selected companies.

One lingering question about the new product is how Facebook plans to make money from it.  According to the tech site Re/Code, companies in the pilot program are using the service for free, and there are currently no ads within the Facebook at Work news feed.

For now, there's no timetable for an official launch of Facebook at Work.
