Expect Traffic Troubles As City Ave Gets Much Needed Facelift
By Michelle Durham
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Expect additional congestion on City Avenue for the foreseeable future, but the temporary inconvenience will benefit drivers for years to come.
Penndot Spokesperson Charlie Metzger explains the repairs to a crucial stretch of the heavily travelled roadway, from I-76 to Haverford Avenue, will actually begin between Haverford and Bala avenues:
"Crews will start with our base repair of City Avenue. This project is the first of several this year."
Thanks to a transportation bill, there will be other repairs too. In addition to repaving, 26 curb ramps will be installed over the next year.
The Bala Bridge deck is also being fixed so the southbound right lane will be closed until the end of June.
Metzger says when it is finished, it will be a smooth travel along City Avenue, and that certainly was not the case this winter:
"This roadway really took a beating."
Paving will take place 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.and will be finished in August. Manhole and storm center adjustments are scheduled weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
For up to the minute updates on traffic conditions on City Avenue are available via Penndot's 511PA Mobile app.
