Excessive Heat Warning Issued For June 20 - 22
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – The National Weather Service has issued an Excessive Heat Warning for the Philadelphia area from June 20th-22nd, 2012.
The city's Heatline (215-765-9040) will be in operation from noon on Wednesday until midnight, and from 8:30 a.m. until midnight on Thursday.
Those at risk include pregnant women, small children, the elderly, people with chronic medical conditions and those who work in high-heat environments.
"We strongly urge the public to visit older friends, relatives and neighbors to ensure that air conditioners or fans are working and homes are adequately ventilated. In a heatwave, the majority of the victims are older people and those with pre-existing medical conditions," explained Philadelphia's Health Commissioner, Donald F. Schwarz.
People who do not have air conditioning are advised to seek relief from the heat, for at least some part of the day, in shopping malls, movie theaters, senior centers and other air conditioned public spaces.
Temperatures on Wednesday and Thursday are expected to reach into the mid-to-high nineties.
