Ex-Villanova AD, Oldest Living Phillie Art Mehan, Dead At 97
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Art Mahan, the oldest living member of the Philadelphia Phillies and ex-athletic director at Villanova University, died Tuesday at 97 of heart failure, according to MLB.com.
Mahan, a longtime athletic director and baseball coach at Villanova University, played one major league season with the Phillies before serving in the US Navy during World War II (see previous story).
According to MLB.com, Mahan hit .244 with two home runs and 39 RBIs in 1940.
As the fourth-oldest big leaguer, Mahan spent most of his life at Villanova, where he boasted a 25-year coaching record of 236-169-5 before becoming the university's athletic director.
