Ex-NJ Teacher Gets 7 Years In Luring Case
WOODBURY, N.J. (AP) — A former New Jersey high school teacher has been sent to prison for seven years for posing online as a teenage boy in what prosecutors say was an attempt to lure a female student into sex.
Fifty-year-old Michael Furey of West Deptford was a biology teacher in Paulsboro when authorities say he sent sexually charged messages to the 17-year-old.
In 2010 prosecutors say he tried to pick the girl up in his vehicle after she visited a friend's house. The victim said it was on a route that only she, her friend and her online acquaintance would have known about.
The 27-year Air Force veteran was convicted of official misconduct and attempted luring (see related story). Under Friday's sentence, he'll be eligible for parole in five years.
He'll have to register as a sex offender.
