Ex-Cop Killed In Upper Darby Was Heavily Armed, Officials Say

UPPER DARBY, Pa. (CBS) -- Upper Darby police investigators have shed more light on yesterday's deadly confrontation between US marshals and a former central Pennsylvania cop accused of shooting his former girlfriend's new boyfriend.
According to Upper Darby police superintendent Michael Chitwood, Anthony Galla (below right) was ready for war when law enforcement officers tracked him down at the Summit Inn Motel, in Upper Darby (see previous story).
"Inside the motel room is Galla, pointing a fully loaded .40-calibre Glock," says Chitwood. "The marshals then fired. There are four shooters -- three marshals and one Pennsylvania State Police officer. A total of 52 shots were fired at Galla."
An autopsy will determine how many bullets found their mark.
The shooting marked the end of a manhunt that began in central Pennsylvania after the 31-year-old former cop allegedly broke into his ex-girlfriend's house and tried to kill her boyfriend.
Chitwood says investigators found a small arsenal of weapons in the motel room and Galla's rental car, including an AR-15, more than 500 rounds of ammunition, a pepper spray grenade, hatchets, and knives.
The investigation is continuing.
