PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The annual Back To School Extravaganza was held Friday at South Philadelphia High School as families prepare to start the school year.
Karen James, with the School District of Philadelphia, says the point of the annual Back To School Extravaganza is to prepare students and parents for the first day of school by providing folks with information, activities and entertainment.
"We have 'Philly Students Got Talent' competitions occuring on the main stage. We have the 'Eat Right Now' program. There's a whole series of workshops and activities going on related to education."
Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter says the city is especially looking forward to the new school year, as they welcome in new superintendent Dr. William Hite Jr.
"We need to stay focused on the young people of this city and when we do that, they'll have a brighter future, they'll have a safer city, more jobs and economic opportunities and the real Philadelphia that we know we can be."
The Mayor adds that his back to school tip is "get all your supplies and get ready to learn!"
