Equality PA Launches Statewide LGBT Education Campaign
By Cherri Gregg
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --- Equality Pennsylvania launched a statewide education campaign on Tuesday to raise awareness about ongoing discrimination against the Commonwealth's LGBT community.
The purpose of the weeklong effort is to let the public know that while gays, lesbians and transgenders can marry, they can still be fired, evicted or treated unfairly because of their sexual orientation.
"People are not protected, discrimination exists," says Ted Martin, executive director of Equality Pennsylvania.
The organization is holding events across the state through Monday to galvanize support for another push to get an LGBT anti-discrimination bill passed in Pennsylvania.
"Last year we had the highest number of co-sponsors ever-- 96 in the house, both Democrats and Republicans. We had 26 in the Senate and now the Governor is in support," Martin says.
A number of Philadelphia groups have joined the effort. For more info go to discriminationexists.org or campaignforfairnessPA.org.
