Enrollment Continues Downward At Pennsylvania's Public Universities
By Lynne Adkins
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- For the second year in a row, enrollment is down in Pennsylvania's university system.
The 14 Pennsylvania state universities had seen more than a decade of enrollment increases, some record setting.
But Karen Ball, vice chancellor for external relations for the State System of Higher Education, says times are changing.
"We've seen a slight decline from record enrollments this year," she tells KYW Newsradio. "It varies by school, it varies by region. Our system is 90 percent state resident attendance, and in some areas of the state there have been sharp declines in high school graduations and we think some of the enrollment issues are related to that."
She says changes are in the works to attract more nontraditional students, such as working older students who need just a few credits to complete a degree.
