Walmart Employee Stabbed Trying To Stop Thief With Flat Screen TV
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Police say a Walmart employee was stabbed early Friday morning during a robbery at the store in Northeast Philadelphia.
It happened around 1:30 a.m. on the 4300 block of Byberry Road at Philadelphia Mills when the cashier confronted a man trying to leave the store with a 42" flat screen TV and a couple of boxes of boots.
Police say the man showed the worker a receipt for a $10 purchase.
Authorities say the suspect tried to leave and the cashier grabbed the television. That's when thief pulled out a knife and threatened to kill the cashier, saying, "Leave, go, or I will kill you."
Police say the suspect then tried to stab the employee in the chest. The cashier blocked the attempt, but ended up stabbed in the forearm.
The 35-year-old employee refused to be taken to the hospital, police say, and was treated on the scene for the minor injury.
The thief got away with the TV in what police describe as a grey or light-colored hatchback, but Chief Inspector Small says there are some pretty good clues to go on:
"Everything was caught on tape. We have pretty good photos and surveillance of the perpetrator inside as well as outside the store."
Police say the suspect also got into an altercation in the parking lot after a pedestrian chased the suspect on foot and tried to ram a shopping cart into his vehicle. The suspect was able to drive away.
Authorities are dusting the boxes of boots which were left behind, for fingerprints.
Officials say the TV is worth about $400.
