Emotions Run High in Philadelphia as Future Doctors Experience 'Match Day'

By Lynne Adkins

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Today was "Match Day" in the medical school community, when fourth-year medical students in Philadelphia and elsewhere find out where they'll perform their residency programs.

At the stroke of noon today at Thomas Jefferson University, there were screams, tears (of joy and perhaps disappointment), and hugs as more than 230 students ripped open their white envelopes to learn where the next several years of learning will take place.

Lauren Kahl (in top photo) is heading to Johns Hopkins to study pediatrics.

"Yeah, it was my first choice -- I'm ecstatic.  I'm just overwhelmed," she told KYW Newsradio.

Brian Clark is headed to the University of Maryland to study internal medicine.

"This is very good," he said with a smile.  "I'm from Maryland and I wanted to go back."

Max Cooper is happy because he's not going anywhere.

"I love the city and I love all the doctors I work with at Jefferson," he said.

Jen Aronchick is heading to New York to become an ob-gyn and admitted she needed time to process the whole experience.

"It's a little overwhelming, you know?"

More than 30,000 students from US and foreign medical schools are now one tiny step closer to achieving their goals.
