Elementary School In Fairmount Selected For Walnut Street Theater Outreach Program

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Bache-Martin Elementary School in Fairmount has been selected for the Walnut Street Theater's adopt a school program. It's a 5 year commitment where actors and instructors from the theater will hold workshops and performances for the kids in grades K-8.

"We open up to the entire school," says Tom Quinn, director of education at the Walnut Street Theater. "So we say Adopt-a-school it's for the entire school community so we will actually go in working with every student in the school on a one to one basis with theater instruction in the classroom, and then the after school program will be opened to anyone who is interested. And we will also be doing profession development for teachers."

Principal Yvette Duperon is excited about the outreach program.

"It's going to be very beneficial for our students and our staff and our community and we are very very happy."

Curriculum based plays will be put on to help students learn about reading writing and math. And Students and teachers will be able to see dress rehearsals of selected shows at the Walnut street theater for free.
