Elementary School In Delaware Evacuated Due To Suspicious Gas Odor
WILMINGTON, Del. (CBS) -- Officials from the Wilmington Fire Department responded to Harlan Elementary School Wednesday morning to investigate a gas odor.
At about 8 a.m., Wilmington City firefighters were called to the school on North Jefferson Street for the report of a gas odor inside.
Upon arrival, firefighters confirmed a gas odor inside. It was discovered that the leak began in the basement area.
Fire suppression companies began air sampling and ventilation of the school.
Fire Department units stayed at Harlan Elementary monitoring gas readings, along with Delmarva gas division.
Approximately 395 elementary students were evacuated and taken to P.S. Dupont Elementary School.
Officials said Harlan Elementary will be closed for the rest of the day Wednesday due to the gas leak.
Officials of Harlan Elementary School have made notifications to parents of the early closure. Parents will be able to pick up their children at P.S. Dupont Elementary school.
