Election 2011: Lots Of Nerves On The Eve Of The Election
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - It's the day before Election Day and suburban candidates and city Republicans are making the most noise.
This was supposed to be a sleeper of an election, but, on or about October first, the area awakened, especially voters in Bucks, Montgomery, Chester and Delaware Counties. Nothing is bigger than the Montgomery County race between Bruce Castor and Jenny Brown on the Republican side and Democrats Josh Shapiro and Leslie Richards, but Democrats are trying to make gains on the Delaware County Council.
The most interesting race in Philadelphia centers on at-large city council, where five Republicans are fighting for two seats. Ronald Reagan always preached his eleventh amendment: Republicans should not speak ill of each other -- forget about that this year. Dennis O'Brien, the longtime state representative, is expected to breeze to victory, but the other Republicans are taking aim at David Oh, especially party stalwart Joe McColgan, who wants that seat. David Oh is under attack on charges that he overstated his military record.
In New Jersey, every Senate and assembly seat is up, but despite Democrats' hopes, this election has not been viewed as a referendum on Governor Christie.
One interesting back story of this election: three Democratic Council members (all expected winners) Bill Green, Jim Kenny and Wilson Goode may want to be mayor and their vote totals will be watched carefully.
