Social Media Buzzing About 'Anonymous' Letter Sent To Elderly Couple In Ocean City

By Todd Quinones

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Barbara and Bill Doughten opened their mail this week, and found this anonymous letter, possibly from an Ocean City realtor saying:

"I'm trying to sell million dollar homes in the neighborhood and I drive my clients around and they see your car parked sideways on the front lawn! You have a driveway – use it!"

"It's for my comfort. I'm not bothering anybody," Bill Doughten said.

Bill started parking there this winter with all the bad storms we had. He found this was the safest and easiest way to unload the groceries.

"I park there because I got a bad leg, I shake and I'm an old man," he said.

Their children and grandchildren are pushing back.

"I wanted to put a stop to [it], like there's an army behind these two people, because if you let it go then the next thing comes, then the next thing," Teresa Doughten said.

So Teresa Doughten's daughter Stephanie took to Facebook.

In a post that has been shared more than 700 times, Stephanie calls the handwritten letter sloppy and unprofessional.

Bill Doughten says he normally does park the car in the driveway, but on occasion he will leave it on the lawn.

The couple agrees the letter was a cowardly act and there are better ways to handle things.

"Why would you send a letter anonymously? That shows the character," he said.

"There's the door, knock," Barbara Doughten said.

For the record Bill doesn't plan on following the writer's demands.
