Early Morning Disturbance At Upper Merion Motel Leaves More Questions Than Answers
KING OF PRUSSIA (CBS) – Upper Merion Township police responded to a report of a disturbance at a Motel 6 which resulted in the suspects jumping from the hotel window and repeatedly ramming into an officer's vehicle and the wall of the motel Saturday morning.
The incident was reported at about 1:45 a.m. Police first on the scene heard a disturbance inside the room, but the occupants refused to open the door. As the officers attempted to force the door open they received a report from a witness that the occupants had broken out a window and were jumping out to the window to the parking lot.
Another officer observed four men who had just jumped from the second story window. One of the men got into the driver's side of a dark colored Toyota Corolla and started the car. The officer pulled up behind the Toyota to prevent it from leaving.
The driver of the Toyota then accelerated in reverse, striking the police vehicle several times until he cleared a path for escape. He then drove the vehicle in reverse at a high rate of speed and struck the outside of the building. He then put the vehicle in drive, accelerated and turned toward the building a second time.
At this time another officer was exiting the building via the rear door when the Toyota drove directly at him. The officer jumped out of the path of the vehicle while firing one shot from his duty weapon.
The Toyota then crashed into the building again and stopped. The suspect then got out of the car and fled on foot while being pursued by the officer. The officer caught up with the suspect and used his Taser to take the suspect into custody.
The suspect was transported to Paoli Memorial Hospital for injuries that he sustained while jumping from the window and crashing his vehicle. He was not struck with any rounds fired by the police.
The incident is still under investigation by the Upper Merion Township Police Investigations Division.
The suspect is currently in the Intensive Care Unit at Paoli Memorial Hospital and has not been positively identified. Charges for are still pending.
