Early April, Yet Some Phillies Boo-Birds Already Roosting
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - It was opening night for the Phillies boo-birds last night, as starter Cole Hamels got an earful of displeasure from some of the fans at Citizens bank Park.
(Voice of Scott Franzke:) "It's 6-0 New York, and here's Charlie Manuel..."
When the Phils' manager emerged with a third-inning hook for starter Cole Hamels, you could hear the first boos of the season.
Hamels was not sharp (see related story), but Phillies fan Matt -- no last name given -- from Cherry Hill, says he still deserved some slack.
"He had a rough outing. I understand disappointment. I understand silence. The booing... it's a little early," says Matt. "He's going to win 15 to 20 games this year. Like, let him get around to it!"
And fellow fan Ben Lansbury, also of Cherry Hill, points out that among the Four Aces, fans are most likely to boo Hamels.
"Oswalt, Lee, and Halladay, they basically give them a free pass. Whereas Hamels, they expect so much more from him," says Lansbury.
And fans we talked with said they do not expect the boos will affect Hamels' next start.
