Eagles' South Philly Stadium Getting Wind, Solar Power Arrays

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Lincoln Financial Field will soon be a greener place, if that's possible. The first of several large, stealth-like wind turbines are now going up at the very top of the Linc.
The 14 wind turbines -- seven each on the north and south sides of the stadium's roof line -- are 15 feet tall, made of carbon, fiberglass, and steel, and weigh about 1,000 pounds each.
Eagles' team officials say they'll help generate energy and won't interfere with the game.

Eagles' president Don Smolenski says they are also in the midst of installing 11,000 solar panels which will do the bulk of the work generating renewable power. Most of those panels are located along the north side parking lot, but some will also be on the roof, a solar wing, and on the 11th Street sidewalk pavilions.
"We made a commitment to be a sustainable business, and try to run as efficiently and conserve energy as much as we could," he notes.
Smolenski says the generating equipment will help the club cut its carbon footprint while sending a message about its eco-commitment.
"This is the largest installation in the NFL and, I think, any major stadium in the US," he tells KYW Newsradio.'
He says the system will produce up to four megawatts of renewable power each year, saving an estimated $3 million per year.
