Eagles Sign Carson Wentz To 4-Year Contract Extension Worth Reported $128 Million
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Carson Wentz isn't going anywhere anytime soon. The Philadelphia Eagles have locked up their franchise quarterback.
The Eagles on Thursday signed the 26-year-old Wentz to a four-year contract extension that will keep the 2016 No. 2 overall pick in Philadelphia through 2024.
According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Wentz's extension is worth $128 million, with more than $100 million guaranteed.
"Can't even explain to you how excited I am right now to be a part of this great city for this many more years," Wentz said in a video posted on Twitter. ""It means the world to me. From the moment I got drafted here, I knew this place was special."
"I knew they had the most passionate fans in the world in all of sports," Wentz added. "I knew we had the opportunity to build something truly special here. To be cemented here this much longer, it means the world to me."
With the extension – which was only a matter of time – the Eagles forgo any concerns about Wentz's future contract, not that there were many. Eagles general manager Howie Roseman can move forward knowing what his franchise QB costs and build the roster with the most important position secured.
The Eagles picked up Wentz's fifth-year, $22,783,000 option on his rookie contract in late April.
In 2019, Wentz will make $720,000 in base salary but will earn $3,367,683 million in roster bonuses, according to Spotrac.
After the four-year extension – worth a reported $128 million – Wentz's contract is essentially a six-year deal worth about $154.87 million.
Wentz completed 69.6% of his passes for 3,074 yards and 21 touchdowns to seven interceptions in his first season back after tearing his ACL in 2017.
He missed the end of the 2018 season with a stress fracture in his back but is fully healthy and has no health restrictions this offseason.
Before tearing his ACL in 2017, Wentz led the Birds to an 11-2 record while breaking the team's single-season record with 33 passing touchdowns.

He was well on his way to an MVP season before the injury, yet still finished third in MVP voting despite missing the final three weeks of the regular season.
The Eagles, of course, beat the New England Patriots, 41-33, to win Super Bowl LII behind backup quarterback Nick Foles.
This offseason, the Eagles allowed Foles to walk free after the QB bought himself out of his 2019 contract.

The Birds could have franchised tagged Foles, but Roseman said, "We think letting him become a free agent is the right thing to do."
Foles signed with the Jaguars, who the Eagles will face in Jacksonville during the preseason.
Wentz will be 32 years old when his extension expires in 2024.
