Eagles Release Cut List
PHILADELPHIA, PA (CBS) — Rather than wait for the first NFL cuts to be announced Tuesday in order to reach the 75-man limit, Eagles' coach Chip Kelly wanted to give some players a chance to possibly catch on with other NFL teams by releasing them on Saturday.
Among the players released on Saturday include Blake Annen (TE), Michael Bamiro (OL), Karim Barton (OL), Kadron Boone (WR), BJ Cunningham (WR), Donald Hawkins (OL), Emil Igwenagu (TE), Jake Knott (LB), Joe Kruger (DE), Daytawion Lowe (S), Frances Mays (DE), Davon Morgan (S), Carey Spear (K) and Alejandro Villanueva (DE).
"We're in the process of that, we have a list that has to go through the league," Kelly explained before Eagles' practice on Saturday at the NovaCare Complex. "We're going to make the predominant number of our cuts today, instead of Tuesday. We didn't think it was beneficial to the players to have them practice Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, and then cut them in the afternoon on Tuesday.
"We wanted to give them a chance, if there is a chance, and I don't know if there is, to see if they catch on with someone else this last week. It's tough to bring someone in if they get released at Tuesday at 4 p.m. and bring them and get them ready to play on Thursday. That's the approach we took with this group."
Kelly said a year's experience has given him and his staff a better understanding of the players that they'd like to have.
