Eagles Interview Duce Staley For Head Coaching Job
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The search is underway for the new head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles.
The Eagles interviewed former running back and current running backs coach Duce Staley on Friday for the vacant coaching position, the team confirmed Saturday.
Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie fired Chip Kelly on Tuesday after nearly three seasons as head coach. In a press conference explaining his decision to release Kelly, Lurie made it clear that current members of the coaching staff would be considered for the job.
Staley is a known favorite of Lurie and remains popular among Eagles fans. He played seven seasons with Philadelphia and rushed for nearly 5,000 yards, including three 1,000 yard seasons.
Staley joined the Birds' coaching staff in 2010 and was promoted to running backs coach in 2013.
The interview helps the organization meet the requirements of the NFL's Rooney Rule, which mandates teams to interview minority candidates for head coaching and senior football operation positions.
The Eagles (6-9) are scheduled to finish out the regular season Sunday against the New York Giants (6-9) under interim head coach Pat Shurmur.
Shurmur is also expected to interview for the job.
