Eagles Fans Fret That 'Sports Illustrated' Cover Jinx May Bite The Birds
By Paul Kurtz
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Eagles are now on a playoff push as they prepare for Minnesota. But some fans are worried that the Birds may going up against another opponent: Sports Illustrated.
"Yes, it's a jinx," said Bob Curry today as he and Nathan ('Jumbo') Daniels munched on some lunchtime wings. They were getting a bit of heartburn while discussing this week's cover of Sports Illustrated -- the one featuring Nick Foles and the Eagles (see related story).
SI has a long history of cover stories that end in disaster for the players and teams being featured -- most recently, AJ McCarron and Alabama "Crimson Tide."
"Alabama was supposed to win it all this year. Auburn upset them on the last play. So the jinx must be true," Daniels tells KYW Newsradio.
The last Eagle to grace the cover of Sports Illustrated was Nnamdi Asomugha. (How'd that work out?)
Another guy we spoke with said he doesn't believe in the SI cover jinx, but, on the other hand, he's not going to bet on the Eagles this weekend.
There are dozens upon dozens of examples of the jinx, going back to the 1950s. There are also just as many (if not more) cases in which players and teams were unaffected. Take Joe Flacco, who hit the cover of SI last January, just before the Ravens beat the Patriots to advance to the Super Bowl.
Something to keep in mind as you get pumped for this Sunday's matchup with the Vikings.
