E-ZPass Discounts On Some New Jersey Roads Could End
WOODBRIDGE, N.J. (CBS) - About half the drivers on the New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway could soon be paying higher tolls during off-peak hours with their E-ZPasses.
How much extra you could pay all depends on where you got the E-ZPass from.
If your transponder comes from one of the agencies within New Jersey's E-ZPass system, like the Delaware River Port Authority, relax. But if it's from another state, the New Jersey Turnpike Authority wants to do away with your average 30 percent off-peak discount.
"To the extent that there are other non-New Jersey E-ZPass account holders who drive our roads off-peak during the week who have an interest in maintaining the discount, guess what? Just come on over to the New Jersey E-ZPass system," Executive Director Ronnie Hakim said.
The proposed change, paired with a plan to double the fee for tracking down toll evaders from $25 to $50, could net the Authority up to $18 million a year.
Public hearings are expected next month.
